Coolant is crucial to health and performance. Here we show you how to check and top up coolant levels in your car.

What does coolant do?

The cooling system is crucial to the performance and health of your engine. A lot of the energy it produces is wasted as heat energy which must be cooled quickly to prevent overheating. Coolant ensures the water in your radiator does not boil in summer or freeze in winter.

Where does it go?

You can identify your car’s coolant/antifreeze reservoir by its lid which may be coloured and state 'Coolant'. Your manufacturer's manual can help you find it if you are unsure. There may also be a warning sign on the cap, to remind you never to open the cap while the engine is hot.

The reservoir itself is often made of semi-translucent plastic allowing you to see the coolant/antifreeze within and check levels without having to open the cap.

If in doubt, check the manufacturer’s manual or pop into your local branch and we’d be happy to point it out to you. Just be careful not to confuse your coolant/antifreeze reservoir with your washer fluid!

How do I check coolant levels?

  1. Locate the coolant/antifreeze reservoir, identifiable by the brightly coloured liquid inside.

  2. Check coolant level against the maximum and minimum level marks on the side of the reservoir

If coolant level is below the maximum line, this could be due to natural losses and you can just top it up.

If the level is below the minimum line, top it up to the maximum line and monitor on a daily basis in case you have a coolant leak. Leaks can cause serious problems if left unattended and should be checked by a trained professional.

Prestone Universal Coolant

How do I top up coolant?

  1. Choose the right coolant/antifreeze – ask in store, use our Parts Finder, send us an email or Live Chat if you are unsure which is correct for your engine. Take a look at Prestone coolant which is compatible with all makes and models.

  2. Switch off the engine and make sure it is completely cool before opening the tank. Never add coolant/antifreeze to a hot car.

  3. Ready to Use coolant can be added straight to the reservoir. If using concentrate, mix the coolant with water, checking the label and your car’s manual to ensure the right mixture.

  4. Twist off the cap on the reservoir and carefully add the new coolant/antifreeze to the tank until it reaches the maximum mark. Don’t overfill.

  5. Replace the cap - make sure the coolant reservoir cap is securely tightened.
